Dry Eye after LASIK By Daniel J Tepper on December 05, 2018

Woman applying eye dropsLASIK surgery is a trusted and popular treatment for various forms of vision impairment. During the LASIK procedure, a flap-like incision is made in the top layer of the cornea so that doctors can access and reshape the underlying corneal tissues.

LASIK is a highly successful procedure for most patients. Although LASIK complications are extremely rare, the procedure will result in some side effects.

One of the most common side effects of LASIK treatment is dry eye. While dry eye tends to be a temporary condition after LASIK, it can still be quite irritating. Dry eye treatment restores moisture to the surface of the eye so that patients can see clearer and live more comfortably.

Those who are dealing with dry eye after LASIK in the Chicago, IL area can rely on treatment at Wicker Park Eye Center to alleviate dry eye symptoms.

Should I Be Concerned about Dry Eye?

Dry eye can cause significant irritation, and may even make the vision appear slightly unfocused. For many patients, these symptoms are cause for concern.

However, LASIK patients should rest assured that dry eye is a common side effect of LASIK treatment, and is rarely a sign of any serious eye problem.

As long as patients follow post-LASIK instructions and avoid rubbing or scratching the eyes, they should heal in a timely manner without any long-lasting dry eye effects.

How Long Will Dry Eye Last?

The recovery process following LASIK is different for each patient. Some patients experience dry eye for just a week or two, but for others it may persist for several months.

In general, patients should expect dry eye symptoms to improve or completely resolve within six to 12 months after the LASIK procedure. In rare cases, patients may deal with lifelong dry eye after undergoing LASIK treatment.

Treating Dry Eyes

Even though dry eye is a common side effect of LASIK, that doesn’t mean that patients have to endure the uncomfortable symptoms that go along with this condition.

There are many treatments that can provide relief until the eyes are fully healed and dry eye resolves. These treatments restore moisture to the surface of the eye and alleviate itching and irritation.

At Wicker Park Eye Center, our doctors take a holistic approach to dry eye. Using diagnostic tools, we determine the cause of dry eye so that appropriate treatment measures can be taken.

Each of the treatments we offer is natural and minimally invasive. Since treatment is tailored to the unique needs of the patient, treatment plans will likely vary.

Some of the treatments that may prove effective for our patients include:

  • Over-the-counter eye drops
  • Prescription medicated eye drops
  • Eyelid wipes
  • Punctal plugs (a small plug placed in the tear duct)
