Study: Cataract Surgery Patients Have Reduced Hip Fracture Fall Risk

An elderly couple on a costal hikeWhen we think about vision care needs, we tend to only think about the benefits to the eyes. Yet good vision has a number of benefits that go beyond your eyesight. Good vision can improve your quality of life, and it may even be crucial in preventing serious injuries. This is why Chicago, IL vision correction specialist Dr. Daniel Tepper believes so strongly in enhancing a patient’s vision as a means of improving their overall well-being.

With this in mind, the team at Wicker Park Eye Center would like to look at a study about the many benefits of cataract surgery. As it turns out, having your cataracts removed could potentially reduce your risk of hip fractures during old age.

Facts About Hip Fractures in the Elderly

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 300,000 people age 65 and older are hospitalized for hip fractures every year. Of these hundreds of thousands of hip fractures, 95 percent are the result of falls.

The elderly tend to have frailer bones than younger folks and are more prone toward falls as their mobility is impacted from age. This is why it’s so important to minimize the risks of falling. Simple measures to prevent falls can mean the difference between a hip fracture and a close call.

Cataract Surgery Study from JAMA

A study published in 2012 by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) looked at the link between cataract surgery in older individuals and the instances of hip fractures among them. This study examined at Medicare Part B beneficiaries who developed cataracts from 2002 and 2009. The study looked at a random 5 percent sample from the total.

Some of these Medicare Part B beneficiaries underwent cataract surgery while others did not. Using this data, the researches wanted to see if cataract surgery could potentially lower the rate of hip fracture among this age group.

Findings of the JAMA Study

The JAMA study concluded that Medicare Part B beneficiaries with cataracts who underwent cataract surgery experienced a lower rate of hip fractures than those who did not have their cataracts removed. Cataract removal was especially important in hip fracture prevention among people with severe cataracts and people age 75 and older.

Bottom Line: Better Vision Can Prevent Injury

Vision plays a vital role in overall stability and balance. If you can see what’s around you, it’s easier for you to step carefully and gauge your footing as you move. Cataracts and other vision problems that impair the vision can make ascending and descending stairs or walking on slick/slippery surfaces much more dangerous.

In essence, undergoing a routine procedure like cataract surgery can help you avoid a number of serious injuries related to falls. This is crucial among the elderly population given the many health risks these people face.
