ADVANCED CATARACT SURGERY State-of-the-Art Technology and Treatment Options
At Wicker Park Eye Center in Chicago, we use top-of-the-line technology to make your diagnosis more accurate and your treatment safer, more precise, and more comfortable.
Our IOLMaster® 700 is a top-rated preoperative tool that identifies irregular measurements in your eye before treatment. In addition, our OPD-Scan III system completes 20 different diagnostic measurements in less than 10 seconds per eye. During the procedure, we use advanced femtosecond laser technology. This advanced laser is used to make precise cornea incisions. The femtosecond laser can also break up the clouded natural lens rather than performing traditional phacoemulsification. This is a crucial step before placing an artificial lens.
The procedure is fairly straightforward and incredibly effective...

ABOUT INTRAOCULAR LENSES How IOLs Address Additional Vision Concerns
During your consultation with Dr. Tepper, you will discuss the different artificial lenses available to you during cataract surgery. We offer a variety of IOLs with different benefits and prices.
One of the key factors in choosing an IOL is the type of eye issues you face besides cataracts. Astigmatism, for example, is a common concern that often accompanies cataracts. Selecting an IOL which corrects for astigmatism can reduce your dependency on prescription lenses after your eye surgery.

Is cataract surgery really worth it?
LIVE A FULLER, LONGER LIFE
In addition to living longer, studies show that patients experience a 20 to 36% improvement in their overall quality of life after cataract surgery.
When should you start considering surgery?
UNDERSTANDING The PROGRESSION of CATARACTS & How Cataract Surgery Can Help
Cataracts are generally related to the aging process and can occur in one or both eyes. As the lens becomes more clouded, vision becomes progressively more blurry.
Some lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and controlling your blood sugar, may slow the progress of cataracts so you can enjoy your remaining vision for longer. Stronger glasses and contacts prescriptions can also help.
While there is promising research into alternatives, the only way to truly address the effects of a cataract is to surgically remove and replace the natural lens with an IOL. Wicker Park Eye Center can treat people throughout the Chicago area suffering from mild, moderate, and severe vision loss caused by cataracts.
EARLY STAGES OF CATARACTS Symptoms May Not Be Readily Apparent
As the cataract grows larger, you may notice:
- Light sensitivity
- Halos around lights
- Cloudy or dim sight
Our patients also report the need for brighter light to complete normal activities. Driving at night may also become more difficult.

WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT TREATMENT? Cataracts Will Only Get Worse
When a cataract is small, it only affects a section of the lens. Over time, cataracts tend to grow so vision gradually worsens. As the clouded area of the lens becomes larger, your vision may become duller or blurrier. Over time, the lens begins to become opaque. This leads to a milky appearance as well as a brownish tint to the vision.
The process of a cataract getting worse makes it more difficult to read and perform other normal daily activities, eventually causing total vision loss. That's why it's important to visit an eye surgeon for cataract treatment. The surgery is currently the only viable option for truly restoring clear vision.
I'm worried about the risks of surgery...
MODERN CATARACT SURGERY IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE A Routine Surgery Performed on Millions of Americans Every Year
While the decision to proceed with surgery should be carefully weighed, know that cataract treatment is a very common procedure. In 2017, approximately 3.8 million cataract procedures were performed in the United States.
Dr. Tepper has over 20 years of experience as a cataract surgeon, performing countless surgeries at his Chicago eye care center. This surgical procedure has evolved in recent decades to be an incredibly safe and straightforward treatment with life-changing results.
Am I even eligible for surgical treatment?
CATARACT SURGERY CANDIDATES Who Qualifies for Surgical Treatment?
Most healthy people who develop cataracts qualify for surgery. We check for several factors:
You Are Suffering from Cataract SymptomsCataract surgery is recommended when patients suffer from worsening cataract symptoms. This often means advanced vision problems involving blurriness, glare, halos, and poor night vision. We will also make sure to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.
Non-Invasive Treatment Is No Longer EffectiveEarly stages of cataract treatment involve stronger prescriptions, extra reading lights, and the use of assistive devices. Cataract surgery is recommended when these treatments are ineffective.
You Are in Good Overall HealthPatients should be in good overall health and able to undergo surgery without unnecessary risk. If a patient suffers from glaucoma or other eye conditions, we can discuss if those issues will affect their eligibility.

After surgery, how soon can I return to my normal activities?
TAKE IT SLOW The First Few Days of Healing
Your vision will be blurry for the first few days after cataract surgery. You will need time to get used to the artificial lens placed during the procedure. We may prescribe you medicated eyedrops or place a protective shield over your eye to allow for proper healing.
As much as possible, avoid rubbing your eyes or putting pressure on them. In most cases, we schedule several follow-up appointments at our Chicago office to monitor your healing. Keep in mind that it takes about eight weeks to fully heal and that you will likely need two separate surgeries if both eyes are affected by cataracts.
CATARACT SURGERY RECOVERY
You should start to notice a difference in your vision right away.
What will my vision be like after surgery?
Cataract Surgery Outcomes
Since a cataract is typically yellow-tinted or brown-tinted, colors will look muted and dull for patients with a cataract. Placing an intraocular lens as part of cataract treatment can allow you to see the world clearly and vibrantly again. For most patients, colors will appear brighter and more brilliant. You can expect these effects to last for years to come
Greater Freedom and Independence
In addition, you can enjoy a new clarity of vision and greater freedom in your daily life. Many patients return to activities they have not been able to participate in for years. Undergoing cataract surgery with a skilled eye doctor, such as Dr. Tepper, can transform your overall quality of vision and life.
