LASIK Q & A

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a minimally invasive procedure to correct refractive errors like astigmatism, nearsightedness (myopia), and farsightedness (hyperopia). LASIK can reduce your reliance on prescription glasses and contact lenses for clear vision.

Wicker Park Eye Center offers LASIK procedures for people 18 and older. Dr. Tepper provides comprehensive eye exams to determine if you’re a candidate for LASIK.

With the newest LASIK innovations, many people who didn’t previously qualify for the procedure now can.

What can I expect during LASIK?

Wicker Park Eye Center works in close partnership with LasikPlus® to match each patient with a highly skilled LASIK surgeon. Dr. Tepper provides care before and after your surgery to ensure a full recovery.

During your LASIK appointment, your surgeon gives you an anesthetic eye drop to numb your eye and a mild sedative to keep you relaxed. They use a device to keep your eye open and prevent blinking during the procedure.

Your LASIK surgeon uses a femtosecond laser that pulses at one-quadrillionth of a second to create a thin flap in your cornea and refine the stroma (inner corneal layer). The procedure takes only a short time, and you’ll need to spend a brief time in the office before you go home.

How long does LASIK recovery take?

It’s normal to experience mild burning or itching for a few days after LASIK. During recovery, don’t rub your eyes or do things like swimming that increase your risk of eye injury.

You’ll visit the Wicker Park Eye Center office the day after your treatment for a checkup. Dr. Tepper will recommend ways you can increase your comfort.

Dr. Tepper evaluates your results one week, one month, and three months after your LASIK surgery to ensure your cornea is healing properly. It can take six months, sometimes longer, for your vision to stabilize and your eye to heal fully.

Many people’s LASIK results last for years. You might still need reading glasses or prescription eyewear if you experience vision loss as you get older. Dr. Tepper will discuss options to improve your vision and continue to monitor your LASIK results.
